Everyone is so unlikeable in the pilot, but I love the premise of vampires as an allegory for the civil rights movement, and their existence not being secret. Other than Eric, my favourite thing about the show was the politics of it all, from the AVL to the Fellowship of the Sun. Unfortunately, the show does go on to make vampires so awful it doesn't really work, but the potential is there. With those sort of undertones, you'd also think they wouldn't throw every black woman stereotype under the sun at Tara, but she is a parody of a parody. Definitely not the strongest starting episode I've ever seen, but sets up what it needs to.

I forgot how much I hated Jason in the first season LMAO. Bill's every interaction with Sookie is so much more perverse in hindsight. He blatantly does not tell her that his blood will make her attracted to him. The "Angelina Adopts Vampire Baby" is such a funny little Easter egg, but it does raise questions if you think about it for more than 0.2 seconds. Oddly, I like the animalistic moment of Bill licking Sookie's head wound. Bill is very Edward Cullenesque here, and honestly pretty compelling. A lot more than later on in the show anyway. JASON'S PATRICK BATEMAN MIRROR MOMENT WITH DAWN LMAO. Once again, big fan of the little moments we see of (Mostly Nan Flannigan) on TV discussing vampire rights. Bill's response to Tara justifiably asking if he owned slaves is so icky. I'm surprised Sookie not only didn't intervene but looked at Tara as if she was the one being rude. I liked the extremely short-lived scene of Jason and Tara chilling together on the couch. Stephen Moyer could have played an incredible Mr. Darcy. Rene telling Sookie she reminds him of his baby sister... chilling. Sam is a creep to me I cannot bring myself to like him at all. They sure do make Sam's shifter nature obvious too. I'm willing to bet Nan herself killed Reverand Newlin.

God I hate how everyone treats Sookie like a child with no agency. The vampire nest plot is so boringgg. Still don't understand why Bill waited that long before intervening when they were harassing Sookie. Dawn was such a baddie RIP :( That scene with Jason was so uncomfortable though, I don't like how it's played off. Though her shooting at him somewhat made up for it. You can tell this show is from the 2000s because the characters keep complaining about $3 coffee being expensive. I think it's odd they introduced Hep-D just for this episode and didn't even call back to it for the Hep-V pandemic. Surely they must have synthesised it. Where the hell is Eric? I miss him.

Do they put something in the V to stop it coagulating? Sam is sooooo annoying. ERICCCC!!!! While I enjoy the fact every character has the opportunity to become somewhat fleshed out, I gotta say a lot of the B plots are awful. I'm dreading seeing Amy Burley again. I like seeing Jason suffer at the doctor's though, he deserves it. Fun stuff being done making it look like a birthing scene too. I can't believe he doesn't ever express even the slightest sorrow for his dead lays. Oh I forgot they tried to make Sam seem like the culprit. Just realised Fangtasia is playing 'Don't Fear the Reaper', I love that. I can't believe Eric is one of the only redeeming features of this show for me now, I rolled my eyes so hard at him when I first watched this episode. I thought the scene where Sookie and Bill get pulled over is great with both the race allegory and how creepy Bill is. These are very much not your teen drama vampires. I think Fangtasia is sort of adorable actually, even if it is cheesy.
